smooth ocular DF. 7x50 Zeiss 1941 with leather Benutzer

before the standard uboat 7x50 was introduced, this model with #trockenpatronen was the standard issue. But it was too fragile. This particular model is from one of the last series of its kind, still with the original leather ocular cap

That is an excellent binocular Martin. In the past few years I have come across quite a few photos of them in use on the front line , most commonly in U Boats - quite a few in that of the "Milkcow" type- most likely as they more often than not had war correspondents attached to them.
Will look out a few when we get back.

This publisher ( some may well know the firm already) - their book on the "Milk Cow" boats shows a good range of U Boat optics for the period as well as being a fantastic study of the type and their individual supply operations.

Mine from the same batch lucky to survive as it has, this one came to the previous owners father in the post war period from a neighbour as payment for work done.

Martin , I obtained a copy of Luc Braeuer's book on Henrich Lehmann- Willenbrock published by Schiffers, in it this photo ( authors copyright ) which might be of interest.

I much prefer the original German term "milch cow" James as, whenever I hear the English term, it puts me in mind of the 1955 Elvis single "Milkcow Blues Boogie" which isn't a bad thing - it just means I've got to rake out my copy and blast it... ;)

True Niall , should have stuck to the wartime nickname. :)
