2148723 Zeiss D.F. 7x50 Finnish Navy
« on: September 16, 2018, 02:10:13 PM »
Dear All:

While SA - Suomi Army - marked binoculars are well-known, these Finnish Navy binoculars are first for me.

A beautiful crest of arms. Second, in my opinion, to the crest of arms of the Portuguese Army carved on a D.F. 8x30 Gas Mask Oculars, which I will present to the group at some point.

Best

Alex

Excellent find and very, very rare. Congratulations, Alex. I have seen so many Finnish military-owned optics yet have never seen naval-marked issue.

Finding naval glasses from the smaller nations which, by their very size, are rare, is always a red letter day. One day I hope to come across a Swiss Navy binocular but, so far, my search has been fruitless. Still - time and patience turns the mulberry leaf into silk...

For me, time and patience tured already the mulberry leaf into silk...dear Niall,

Look this my museum piece and its nice military logo. . . Purchased a long time ago by a Swiss shepherd. . .  It seems to belong to Admiral Lindt von Spr√ľngli  ;) ;) ;)

Thanks Zbig and Niall!

I am a big fan of lesser navies. I had a chance to buy a Silvamar with Croatian Navy markings from WWII once, but was too inexperienced at the time to appreciate its significance.

I do have one from the Royal Romanian Navy, which I shall present here at some point.

Switzerland does have a navy, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_Armed_Forces#Lakes_flotilla, so chances are that sooner or later their binoculars will surface.

Rodolfo's joke was a good one Alex but I hope he doesn't milk it. ;D

Wasn't the Croatian Navy formed after the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990's? Up to WW2, Croatians would surely have been in the Royal Yugoslav Navy.

The Wiki link you attached indicates there's no official Swiss Navy and the patrol vessels are run by the army.

Hi Niall,

During WWII there WAS a Croatian Navy, because Croatia itself was not a part of Yugoslavia, but rather a puppet state of Germany.

Best,

Alex

Thanks Alex - I see what you mean now The Navy of the Independent State of Croatia

This is what excites me about these old binoculars - the chance to learn the history about events we rarely hear of now.

It's a pity you missed out on the Croatian Silvamar - it's probably as rare as Rodolfo's Swiss admiral's binoculars. ;)

Yes, Niall,

We all learn on our mistake - at that time I thought that a Silvamar is a Silvamar is a Silvamar!

I wish I knew better
