Fitted to large Kriegsmarine rangefinders, these monoculars featured movable prisms enabling the observer to follow a climbing target without moving his neck. Filters and reticle illumination with a flp back eye rubber and read off scale for angle of prism.

Nice and ingenious device Niall.

Confesses Niall, you don't even know how many optics you have. . . :D

I have been always puzzled by these instruments with very large movable prism. Did not know that these might have been used in rangefinders. Thought these were some kind of optics used in fixed fortifications. Here are two examples - Goerz Bratislava and Optikotechna - I guess the same principle of working as yours.

Maybe they could be used in both Zbig but here's the British version;

EXcellent photo, Niall! It would be good to see a photo of such movable-prism telescopes attached to big German rangefinders. I have not seen any so far but I am sure that James will have something... :D

I've looked but fear you're correct Zbig - we have to rely on James, our picture archivist. Here's a better British shot though; ;)

This seems to be the monocular & range finder.

Thanks for the most interesting photos, Jams and Niall. We need to find photos of German rangefinders which have telescopes with these large movable prisms  :-\
