These binoculars belonged to Margaret Latta Whiting who was given an award in 1944 for her work as Deputy Head of the Wounded and Missing Department, Joint. War Organisation of the British Red Cross.

This was a group set up to help people seeking information about servicemen who were reported missing or wounded.

Families without news of their loved ones used the service to find out if they were safe.

She died in a convent in Hampshire in 1996.
