CARL ZEISS JENA – GALAN 2 ½ X
« on: December 02, 2017, 01:00:34 PM »
Hi everyone

Since his first period of its activity, Carl Zeiss has been engaged, also in the field of theater binoculars. The very first models (before 1907) with 4x magnification, and were used for general tourist purpose, and theatre.

Two Zeiss theater models were the "Teleater" with 3 magnifications and the "Theatis" with 3.5 magnifications.

But while the "Theatis" was designed directly as theater binocular, the "Teleater" was probably a modification of the "Teletur".

The third theater binocular produced by Zeiss was the "Galan" built from 1924 to 1934, that differs from the previous ones by a lot of characteristics.

In 1924, with the purpose of making a theater binocular for all purses, Zeiss began producing an economic binocular with simplified optical and mechanical design. It was therefore a Galilean binocular with central adjustment (Mitteltrieb) and without the interpupillary distance adjustment.

Its optical characteristics were optimal for a binocular to use at the Opera. With its brightness, 2 1/2 magnification, FOV 210/1000 mt. and 208 gr. weight, it is possible easily watch the entire scene.

Interesting fact: three different versions with different interpupillary distance were offered to customers - 61mm, 64mm and 67mm. Sometimes the interpupillary distance is not marked on the binoculars, then we can think that the buyer, he had to prove it as a pair of glasses.

Several cases were proposed to satisfy either the male or female clientele.

As for the serial number, for this model, it does not follow the standard numbering, so it is impossible to know exactly the year of manufacture.

The models in the photos, are two "Galan" with different cases, and in a photo we can clearly see the difference of the interpupillary distance.

Note: that in the older "Galan" magnification is not indicated.
